KAMPALA – On 30th March 2020, HE. Yoweri Museveni ordered an immediate nationwide lockdown in a bid to halt the spread of the coronavirus which had so far infected 33 people in the country; shopping malls and businesses selling non-food items were ordered to close.
Food market vendors who continued to trade were forbidden to return to their homes for the duration of the lockdown, while factories could stay open if workers remained on the premises for the duration of the shutdown.
People allowed to move around on foot but not gather in groups of more than five at a time however the president also ordered a nationwide curfew from 7 p.m to 6:30 a.m.
Last week, Dr Jane Ruth Aceng addressed the media on the Government of Uganda considerations for a phased lifting of the lock-down with effect from the week ahead.
Some of the areas that have seen the light according to the considerations include mass gatherings for prayers, political rallies, meetings and weddings which shall not exceed 200 persons, cinemas, gyms, massage parlors and mobile markets will resume operations effective 14.11.2020.
Considering the phase of the epidemic Uganda is in, with rising cases and deaths in urban areas, the suspension on bars and discotheques will continue until further notice.
Casinos and gaming outlets may resume operations after fulfilling conditions included in the Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) beginning 14.11.2020. However, hours of operation will be restricted to 6:30 am to 7:00 pm.
Curfew and other areas not mentioned will remain as is.
