Amidst a steady rise of the Ugandan Aviation Sector, especially since the revival of the Uganda airlines in August 2019, there have been several challenges faced even though achievements of the institution have kept on soaring more and more over the years.
Among the challenges faced included the need for continued investment in airport infrastructure, air traffic management systems, and human resources development that focuses on improving the skills, knowledge, and abilities of employees as well as training, education, and career development programs to enhance individual and organizational performance. These have largely contributed to even losses incurred especially by the Uganda airlines.
The global outbreak of COVID-19 in 2019 was also on of the challenges that left some of the sector’s activities paused until the pandemic was eased.
On a higher note, however, a significant number of privately owned Aviation companies in the country have gradually come on board . These may include but are not limited to ; BAR Aviation company, Kampala Executive Aviation, Aerolink Uganda and even more. The rise of some of these has come with numerous challenges that include territory encroachment without legal permission and even accidents.
Some of these challenges raised concerns from higher authorities, for example , the crash landing of a BAR Aviation helicopter that one executive, the deputy speaker of Parliament Hon. Tayebwa had boarded on his way back from Western Uganda to Kampala on August 3rd 2024 upon accomplishment of official work. This accident which left those concerned in awe reportedly left those aboard safe and sounding.
Additionally, the BAR Aviation company also faced investigations after one of their planes was noticed flying over the state house, a zone in which air flight is highly prohibited
Another issue saw the Ocean Heights Aviation company undergoing investigations after one of its flight flew in a restricted zone in Nakawuuka in December 2023, an area that holds some of the government’s sensitive facilities and personnel.
These incidents have greatly raised wide spread alarms about the country’s Aviation Sector. As a result, the Uganda Civil Aviation Authority is under pressure to tighten regulatory systems in order to rebuild confidence in people about the sector.
