Uganda Prisons Service Briefs the Press.
As of today, 6th January 2025, the senior commissioner of prisons , Frank Baine Mayanja has briefed the Press and different media houses on matters concerning the Uganda Prisons Service.
Matters discussed in his address were listed in a document released by the institution that was written as below;
1. Staff and prisoners establishment
Unlock as of 6/1/2025, is 40,803 convicts, 37,476 remands, 545 debtors totaling to 78,824 inmates plus 280 kids kept in 269 prison units grouped in 19 Regions. The UPS staff are 14,021.
2. Peaceful festivities.
UPS congratulates staff, prisoners, and all security agencies for ensuring a peaceful Christmas and New Year season. However, there were attempted escape incidents involving four (4) prisoners from Dokolo, Iganga, Murchison Bay prisons. Unfortunately, one recapture of Fort Portal Main Prison was fatal. A convict No.F.711/022 Turyamureba Ronald, aged 26, charged of rape succumbed to bullet wounds.
3. Resumption of visitation
The public is hereby informed that prisoners’ visitation resumed on Friday, 3/1/2025 while standby class one period is maintained until 18/1/2025.
