UPDATE! Police gives account of Mbarara City explosion. The police in Mbarara City have given account of Mbarara City afternoon blast stressing that it was a gas cylinder not bomb blast.
According to Rtd Col James Mwesigye the Mbarara City Resident Commissioner, the blast occurred when the scrap dealer was cutting a metal piece and cylinder exploded.
From the blast, two people have been confirmed dead on spot while seven others sustained injuries and were rushed to Mbarara Regional Referral Hospital for further medical attention.
Mwesigye who heads the City Security advised scrap dealers to be more vigilant in transacting the business stressing that some metals are liable to explosion once recklessly handled.
“The people of Mbarara especially those buying scrap must be very careful, see something you’re buying, see the metal you’re buying that it’s not distractive” he said.
The incident comes at a time when the country of recent experienced a number of bomb blasts in the city when seven people were killed in a twin bomb blast at CPS Kampala and Parliamentary Avenue.
