UNBS seizes waragi tanks from Lira and Gulu City. Uganda National Bureau of Standards –UNBS has seized 7,240 liters of local waragi from Lira and Gulu Cities.
The standards agency impounded the waragi alongside counterfeit goods during the routine monitoring of markets carried out joint by the UNBS Surveillance team and police.
The other impounded items are 884 liters of unlabelled sunflower cooking oil, 95 kilograms of toilet tissue, 95 kilograms of cosmetics containing hydroquinone, and 12 trucks of maize flour, among others. The products were being sold in wholesale and retail shops in the two cities as well as other selling points.
Rashid Eton, the UNBS Northern Region Administrative Officer, says that the operation was prompted by reports on the alleged sale of substandard, fake, and uncertified products obtained by their surveillance team and complaints from consumers. Eton revealed that the impounded items have been dispatched to the UNBS laboratory for analysis before they take appropriate action.
According to Eton, substandard goods have continued flooding the Uganda market because some manufacturers start production without getting the necessary certification from UNBS while others simply evade the certification process.
He appealed to the general public to be vigilant about the kind of products sold to them, adding where they are suspicious, they should report to the UNBS for immediate action.
Alex Otema, a businessman and the Chairman of Keyo Road Business Community in Gulu City, says that UNBS knows all the factories manufacturing the fake products but has failed to act against the proprietors.
Otema also appealed to the UNBS to embark on massive sensitization of the business community across the country on how to identify and differentiate between substandard, fake, and uncertified products in a bid to save them from incurring losses when the products are impounded.
