KAMPALA – The Uganda National Medical Stores, commonly referred to as (NMS), is a government organization mandated to procure, store and distribute human medication and health related consumable items to all government owned health facilities in the country.
Today, the Permanent Secretary for the Ministry of Health, Dr. Diana Atwine visited the construction site of the Medicines and Health Warehouse in Kajjansi that is near completion.
The state-of-the-art storage facility will help National Medical Stores (NMS) in coping with the increase in drug stocks and requisitions and also complement NMS’s main Entebbe warehouse.
The warehouse will contain cold rooms that will cater for the storage of medicines and vaccines that are sensitive to both hot and cold conditions to enable the country to have a buffer drug stock to cater for shortages, Dr. Atwine said.
The facility will also ensure drug and medicine availability when requested by health facilities and provide an emergency stockpile in case of a drug shortage as the distribution of medicine is done according to delivery schedules.
The General Manager of NMS Moses Kamabare revealed that deliveries of medicines are done on schedules with copies of delivery notes being given to the offices of the RDCs, CAOs, and district health offices, and others pinned on the notice boards of health centers for easy monitoring.
