Golfers Brave the Weekend Downpour to Combat Stanbic Match Play Challenge Round One. Heavy rains over the weekend hampered play at the Entebbe Golf Club, one of Uganda’s oldest and most attractive golf courses.
Despite nature’s choice to flood sections of the course, hundreds of golfers defied the odds and endured the challenging circumstances to advance to the next round of this famous competition.
According to Sam Bulenzi, Chief Information Officer of Stanbic Bank Uganda, no weather condition will prevent the largest financial company from sponsoring golf in Entebbe. He praised the brave men and women who withstood continual heavy rains to achieve achievements that advanced them to the next round in May.
“For a very long time, I have been under the pouring rain, because I’m one of those bigheaded golfers who defied nature and played up to the 19th hole. Our commitment as Stanbic Bank to support this great game of golf cannot be determined by a mere weather condition. Be it rain or sunshine, Stanbic Bank will be here to offer the necessary support towards all the linkmen at Entebbe Golf Club,” Bulenzi said.
However, the Entebbe Club Captain, Sserwano Walusimbi, revealed that the weather forced the organisers to postpone several of the games scheduled for the weekend.
“The administration of Entebbe Golf Club met and agreed to move some of the competition matches to other days between April 8th and 21st, 2024. Players have been given the chance to choose acceptable days and times to compete against one another in order to advance to the second round of this important contest, which is scheduled for May 17th, 2024,” Walusimbi stated.
Walusimbi stated that the incident will have no effect on the events leading up to the following rounds, which are scheduled for May 17th, 2024.
He stated, “All those who were unable to play on Saturday will participate on the highlighted days, and this will not disrupt operations at the next level since we have time on our side. By the time round two takes place in May, we will have collated the performances of everyone who performs throughout the fortnight alternate programme.”
The Entebbe Match Play Challenge is a golf competition that includes both the main contest and subsidiary battles for those who could not qualify for the main tournament. Match Play round one drew almost 200 participants, although fewer than half were able to completely participate.
