President Museveni, First Lady Janet Host Team Uganda Athletes, Commend Them for Raising Uganda’s Flag High. Team Uganda athletes are welcomed by President Museveni and First Lady Janet, who praise them for raising the Ugandan flag high.
The government has reaffirmed its commitment to continuing to promote Uganda’s sporting excellence, which President Yoweri Kaguta termed as the culmination of extensive progress and transformation.
“Like, how would sports survive if there’s no peace in the country?” H.E. Museveni said, adding that athletes like John Akii-Bua won gold in September 1972 when there was unrest in the nation, but more medals are being won in places like Kapchorwa because “there’s some calm in that area now.”
The fountain of honour also reassured athletes that they will continue to be given a monthly payment of 5 Million Shillings for Gold Medalists, 3 Million shillings for Silver Medalists and 1 Million shillings for Bronze Medalists per month and also develop sports infrastructure across the country.
The President encouraged Sportsmen and women to get involved in the Parish Development Model (PDM) that aims at getting all the homes out of what he termed “moneylesness”.
The President made the comments on Thursday at State House in Entebbe, where he and the First Lady, who is also the Minister of Education and Sports, had hosted several groups of athletes.
