Parliament to elect Jacob Oulanyah’s successor this week. The speaker of the Parliament of Uganda died on Sunday 20th March in Seattle USA.
Upon the death of Oulanyah the speaker of the Parliament of Uganda, dates have been set for the election process to vote a NEW Speaker.
The National Resistance Movement (NRM) political party which is also the seating government for the Republic of Uganda has set tomorrow Tuesday as the date for the expression of interest for the position of Speaker of parliament.
The Central Executive Committee of the NRM political party will later convene on Wednesday and Caucus on Thursday to decide on the flag bearer of the political party. The election of Speaker will be conducted on Friday.
According to the Minister of ICT and National Guidance (today) Cabinet noted that @Parliament_Ug shall convene on Friday 25th, March 2022 to fill the vacancy of the Speaker. Hon. Chir Baryomunsi was speaking to journalists this evening at the Uganda Media Center in Kampala.
However, there has not been any member of parliament who has expressed interest in contesting for the position. The public is also eager to see whether the previous competitors including the former speaker of parliament Rht. Hon. Rebecca Alitwala Kadaga among other NRM political party members like the Government Chief-whip Thomas Tayebwa will be part of the process.
As the NRM government strikes a balance for gender equality and equity in the leadership of the 11th Parliament higher chances are that the former speaker being female and the current Deputy Speaker is female the NRM political party must seriously filter their male candidates to retain the speakership position putting out chances for the female competitors in the speakership race.
The late speaker Rht. Hon. Jacob Oulanyah has also been the Member of Parliament for Omoro County constituency and a very pivotal individual in the Northern region of the country. President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni announced the death of the Right. Hon. Speaker Jacob Oulanyah on Sunday 20th March 2022 at about 1:07 pm East African Time.
In a social media post, President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni and Chairman of the NRM political party said, “Countrymen and Countrywomen. It is with a lot of sadness that I announce the death of the Rt. Hon. Jacob Oulanyah, the Speaker of Parliament.
I got information of this sad news at 10.30 am, East African time from People that have been with him and the doctor that was caring for him in the intensive care unit. He was a good Cadre. I delayed the announcement so that his children would be informed first. May His soul rest in eternal peace.”
