KAMPALA – Article 17(1)(i) of the Constitution of the Republic of Uganda spells out a duty of citizens “to combat Corruption and misuse or wastage of public property”
In 2018, President Museveni established the State House Anti-Corruption Unit (SH-ACU) under the leadership of Lt. Col. Edith Nakalema as a link to the citizens in the fight against the misuse of resources or power for private gain “corruption”.
The SH-ACU is a small & agile unit with a trinity of cultures that merges experience and practices from military, police and civilian sectors that allows seamless information gathering and verification hence an innovative approach and speedy response to expose corruption tendencies.
The Unit is mandated to engage the public through Barazza meetings, a 24hr call centre, and to implement an open-door policy to rapidly respond and manage cases in collaboration with other Anti-Corruption Agencies under the Justice Law and Order Sector to ensure that there is Zero tolerance to corruption.
Lt. Col. Edith Nakalema during a press briefing dubbed #ExposeTheCorrupt said that the active Citizenry participation in the fight against corruption around the country has created an impact on the efforts of the government recorded investigations of about UGX. 256 Billion monetary value cases where over 60,000 complaints were received, 248 arrested and arraigned in Courts of law, 185 Public officers interdicted, 24 convicted and sentenced and 500 Ugandans repatriated from Middle East and 43 top officials in both private and public institutions have been implicated
A total of UGX. 24.52Bn was saved from Inflated Bukasa Port UGX. 3.6Bn, Improved Post Bank performance to UGX. 8.38Bn, Covid19 food relief funds UGX. 8.65Bn, Improved NAGRC&DB performance 175% increased Non-Tax Revenue – from 800M to 2.2Bn and recovered from Labour export firms UGX. 1.4Bn, Gaming and Lotteries Regulatory Board Over UGX. 700M, Jinja Local Government UGX. 120M, she added.
She also emphasized that the guidance by HE. President enabled the unit to create partnerships with other institutions relevant to the cause which has expedited the process of building public trust in institutions.
